Gedong Songo Temple Complex, nestled on the slopes of Mount Ungaran in Central Java, is an archaeological site that offers visitors a glimpse into Indonesia’s ancient Hindu past. Built in the 8th to 9th centuries during the early period of the Medang (or Mataram) Kingdom, the complex originally consisted of nine temples, hence the name Gedong Songo, meaning “nine buildings” in Javanese, spread across a scenic volcanic hillside at elevations of 1,200 to 1,400 meters above sea level.
Today, Gedong Songo is not only a vital link to Java’s ancient spiritual traditions, but also a prominent cultural tourism destination. Visitors can explore its terraced paths surrounded by pine forests, panoramic mountain views, and natural hot springs, experiencing a unique convergence of history, nature, and sacred heritage in one of Java’s archaeological sites full of atmosphere.
