S12 – Biomolecular approaches and the history of human settlements in the Southeast Asia Archipelago

The existence of humans in the Islands of Southeast Asian in the past and current living populations proves and presents the richness, diversity and complexity of the history of settlement in this region and its surroundings. This complexity is reflected in their morphotypes, races, ethnicity, and material culture. This is inseparable from the strategic position of the Southeast Asian Islands as a global crossing area, with the existence of islands, seas, and mountains, and its dynamics and geological-dynamic changes, which allow for the interaction of global variables with the local environment continuously across time. The very real progress and development in the biomolecular study of past and present human populations in the Islands of Southeast Asian has revealed and answered many questions of settlement in space, time, and intensity, but has also left and raised puzzle and new questions.

In this symposium, the discussion will cover the following topics mainly: (i) Morphotypes and genetic variation of human populations in Islands South-East Asia, (ii) Biomolecular markers of ancient humans and their relationship with the present-day living population in the Southeast Asian Region, covering nucleic acids, proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates; (iii) Construction of past environments, biological evolution, and cultures in the region using biomolecular markers of DNA, lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates; (iv) Approaches to sampling and handling archaeological remains and the challenges and opportunities of working in the acquisition of biomolecular markers in studies of history of human settlements in the Southeast Asia Archipelago; (v) Advances, limitations, and challenges of analytical chemistry techniques especially in the use of mass spectroscopy, isotope analysis, and omic technologies, including methylome, in constructing human habitation in Island Southeast Asia.

The symposium will be implemented through presentations by speakers on central topics, debate sessions, and inviting researchers within the scope of the discussion of Biomolecular approaches and the history of human settlements in the Southeast Asia Archipelago in the Call for Paper. Abstracts submitted to the Call for Paper will be selected whether to be delivered as an oral presentation or delivered as a poster presentation.
